Six 45 minute class sessions with a break for lunch, and from 3:15-5:00 the students will divide up into groups and have some debates

Let’s Debate! Adapted from an advertisement by Deanna Stollar
Are you looking for a new and different experience for
your high school or middle school student? One that could
possibly change their life as well as yours? Debate might
be your answer. We have found that it is the best tool for
expanding one’s mind and developing the analytical and critical thinking skills
necessary to effectively impact today’s world. Best of all,
these skills and more are learned without the boring monotony of textbooks.
Additionally, everything learned can be applied almost
immediately to real life situations.
This debate league focuses their competition around team policy debate, but with a somewhat different twist than many of today’s high school debate programs. Instead of encouraging “wrangling over words” or “finessing the truth” with trickery, the debater’s argumentation style must be backed with thoughtful content. Thus, our debate is not reduced to a game, but remains a clash of ideas and concepts with true learning as the primary goal.
The course taught in our club requires an average of five hours of homework weekly. Students should earn ½ credit of high school credits as well as a working understanding of debate for second semester competition.
This year’s topic will help your student gain a greater knowledge of our country’s history and the current governmental and political issues related to it both nationally and internationally. In addition, their research, writing, editing, computer, and speaking skills will be greatly enhanced.
For more information, visit this website www.taxmantom.com/debate or call 512-338-1422
Note: our club is planning on offering both Team Policy & Lincoln Douglas debate, as well as all 10 of the 12-18 year-old speech events and all 4 of the junior division speech events. This year ARC is expanding into a once every other week extemporaneous speaking class. The general club schedule is usually 4:15-6:00 speech (alternating between extemporaneous speaking and the 9 other speech events, every other week, 6:00-6:30 meal (brown bag, pot luck, pizza, etc.) and 6:30-8:30 debate. See www.AustinRhetoricClub.org syllabus for more specific club meeting information.
