Syllabus, Textbook & DVD Order Information For the Fall 2006 (Subject to Change)

Syllabus

                    2006-07 Syllabus of the Austin Rhetoric Club

(key: Team Policy Debate in black, Lincoln Douglas Debate in Fuchsia, Individual Events in Blue, Tournaments and Workshops in Purple, Homework in Green, Pot Lucks in Red):  We usually do not have club meetings when there is a tournament or conference.  They typically are on Fridays, anyway.

  1. 6-20-06, 5:00-6:30PM, Parents' meeting at the Snodgrass's home.

  2. 6-23-06 at 3:45-4:45 ARC's 1 hour of Speech presentations at CHEACT book fair

  3. 6-24-06 at 3:45-4:45 ARC's 1 hour discussion about Debate at CHEACT book fair

  4. 7-26-06, 1:00 pm - 7:30 pm, Beginning Speech and Debate Workshop, Bayshore Bible Church, 901 Brawner Pkwy, Corpus Christi, TX 78411, (the Umstattds are helping the Way South Speech & Debate Club to teach this)

  5. 7-29-06 Workshop  or collaboration about posting research on ARC's Yahoo Group, 1PM-4PM, location at The Lighthouse (a house-looking building behind the main building) at Hope Chapel (click here for directions).  The officers' (open to all) meeting: 11:30-1:00 (bring a sack lunch if you come to this meeting)  The research workshop or "collaboration" is 1:00-4:00.  Pizza following

  6. 8-25-06 (Fri) 4:15 pm - 6 pm, with potluck & fellowship 6-7pm.  ARC club meeting only for the teachers (ARC'ers who were in the club last year) for the 8-26-06 Workshop.  Those non-teachers who are setting up can come at this time and set up.  Student/teachers please have your teaching outlines ready to discuss.  For introductions, bring a written outline of some of your accomplishments in ARC and something unusual about yourself.

  7. 8-26-06, 8:30 am - 5pm (Sat), Beginning Debate Workshop for everyone, $30 per family, lunch extra.  Hope Chapel, 6701 Arroyo Seco, Austin  Homework:  pick a piece of literature, prose, poetry (no movies or TV shows!) for your interpretive individual event(s) & make sure you have all of the textbooks.

  8. 9-1-06 4:15 pm-6 pm, (Fri), Meet in Room 29 Upstairs for a Video Shoot of last year's Individual Events for the production of DVDs for the public and ARC.  Freshmen ARC'ers may where "regular clothes."  The Sophomore & Varsity ARC'ers who are speaking wear debate clothes.  Everyone please come, we need lots of audience there to help those presenting IEs.  Move down to the Family Room for a  potluck & fellowship 6-7pm.  Debate (both LD & Team Policy together in the Family Room) 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm., debrief those who went to summer camps:  Avery Lill (Team Policy Debate at Patrick Henry College) & Madeleine Sullivan & David Umstattd (LD Values Debate).  Homework Assignment for the next class:  read Christy Shipe's An Introduction to Argumentation and Debate, Chapters 1 & 2 (pp. 5-6 & 9-11 only), Thane Rehn's As I Was Saying, pages 5-9 & 79-88  LD'ers:  Homework for LDers for this Friday: Read Chapter 1 of LINCOLN DOUGLAS VALUE DEBATE, complete & hand in Chapter 1 Study Guide.
