10th Annual NCFCA National Speech and Debate Tournament

David Umstattd wins 2nd in OI; ARC Breaks 7 IEs to Semi-Finals

Patrick Henry College in Purcellville, VA, June 6-9, 2006

2 Team Policy Debate Teams and 20 Individual Events, including 4 in Apologetics, received invitations to the National Tournament.  That is 22 out of 84 National slots awarded to 10 different ARC'ers in 8 out of the 12 speech and debate categories.  In 2005 ARC sent 5 students in 10 events, this year we more than doubled, and for the first time in 6 years Austin is sending not just one Team Policy debate team, but 2 to the National Tournament.  In 2005 ARC broke only 1 event to the Semi-finals, but in 2006 we broke an amazing 7.

But despite the awards, we hold true to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  We also fear Him, knowing in Proverbs 16:18 that "Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall."  And in Hebrews 12 "Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith."  We work out our own salvation with fear and trembling as it is God who works in us, both to will and to do, His good pleasure (Phil. 2:12-13).

Message from Tom Umstattd, ARCoach,

Summary of Region IV Qualifier Tournament, written Sunday, April 9, 2006

In Apologetics, ARC won 6 out of the top 16, and 4 of the top 8.  44 out of the 81 events ARC entered are invited to the Region IV tournament, 5 out of the top 8 Sweepstakes Overall Speakers were from ARC:  Monica Calderon (2nd), Brian Morgan (3rd), David Umstattd (4th), Paul Hastings (7th) & Cynthia Umstattd (8th).   4 ARC'ers (Christina Hastings, Stephanie Randall, Madeleine Sullivan & Ben Snodgrass) who were not already invited to the Region IV Tournament, now received invitations, 1 team, Christina Hastings/Ben Snodgrass and 13 new events qualified.  ARC has 1 new Iorn Man, Monica Calderon, and 1 new Marathoner, Brian Morgan.

However, some in our club are not so "successful."  Success is a poor teacher.  Let us now embrace the lessons that Jesus has for us as we share in His sufferings and contemplate our "failure."  One of the reasons that our family started this club was to make men and women.  Not "Arnolds" or "Valley Girls", but true believing men and women, that can learn maturity & integrity with eloquence.  Concerning the making of a man, Rudyard Kipling wrote in his epoch poem, IF

...If you can dream - and not make dreams your master,
        If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same...

...Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

For an entire transcript of the poem click:  http://www.businessballs.com/ifpoemrudyardkipling.htm

At this tournament, we have had some of our best speakers fail to qualify to go onto the next level.  Most, 9 out of 17, of our team policy debaters now have next year as their future.  7 out of 20 of our contestants at this tournament did not receive an invitation to the Region IV Tournament later this month.  Out of our 4 ARC'ers that won first in Texas in their events, only Brian Morgan qualified into the final round in that event (Apologetics).  Disappointment prevailed, not just with our club, but all over the room after only about 1/2 dozen new team policy debate teams were announced as receiving invitations.  So few!  "I have worked so hard learning, practicing and researching this year.  My partner's and my name were not called out, not on the list, we are not invited to go to Houston as a contestant."  At this moment, and now as we peruse our ballots, Jesus is beckoning us to come to near to Him.  Our Savior is closest to the broken-hearted.  Our hearts are broken and contrite, a very good condition for our Lord to do his work.  I feel like a fork has been stuck in my heart.  I am like the freshly tilled earth of the farms I passed on the long, quiet way home.

But I have good news, and it is not about saving money on my car insurance.  True failure would have been if the 7 speakers or 9 debaters stayed home instead of giving it their best against the best speakers from Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma.  You are a success because you ran the race, you fought a good fight, you endured until the end.  I cannot even begin to express how proud, in the good way, I am with each one of you, especially with Henry Alford, Josue Calderon, Avery Lill, Rachel Louis, Toni Maisano, Lydia Miller & Tim Randall.  Each of you, honestly had a good chance of making it and gave it your best shot.  Perhaps it is hard to understand this now, but you will remember this disappointment for your lifetime, which is a gift the rest of us did not get.  With God's help, this disappointment is a valuable building block to a well-adjusted, tenderhearted man or woman of God.

Calderon/Calderon Places 2nd in Team Policy at

ASAP Tournament in Weatherford, TX

November 4-5, 2005

How 10 ARC debaters and 6 parents spent their weekend, by Tommy Umstattd.

Without the support and care of these 6 parents, the trip to Weatherford would have only been a dream in the hearts of so many honorable youth.  Thank you.

  1. Cherie Miller
  2. Liz Morgan
  3. Jeff Rodgers
  4. Joanne Rodgers
  5. Kate Sullivan
  6. Tom Umstattd

Our 10 ARC’ers participated in 39 individual events giving 94 IE speeches, plus 43 debate rounds, and 172 team policy speeches in just 2 days, plus allowing our children to watch over 50 other young talented speakers give even more speeches, all in 2 days.  What other safe, Christian venue offers such a vast experience?

David Umstattd and Jonathan Rodgers came in 9th place, only because David forgot his dress shoes.  Nearly every judge complained about this and likely gave David lower speaker points.  David apologizes to the club and to Jonathan.  Also, Avery Lill and Madeleine Sullivan went 2-2, amazing for 2 so young and inexperienced.  Way to go girls!

Only Apologetics, Impromptu and Open Interpretation had final rounds, and only 1st, 2nd and 3rd places were awarded in all 10 events.  Monica Calderon won 1st Place in Apologetics,  2nd in Humorous Interpretation & made finals in Impromptu; Brian Morgan won 2nd in Apologetics, 2nd in Dramatic Interpretation, Kristen Rodgers won 2nd in Persuasive, Jonathan Rodgers made it into finals in Impromptu and Brisa Calderon made it into finals in Apologetics.  Below are the individual events that each participated in:

  1. Brisa Calderon:        Apologetics, Team Policy, Impromptu
  2. Monica Calderon:     Apologetics, Team Policy, Impromptu,  Humorous Interp. & Duo
  3. Josue Calderon:       Apologetics, Team Policy, Impromptu
  4. Avery Lill:                 Humorous Interpretation, Team Policy, Impromptu
  5. Lydia Miller:             Apologetics, Team Policy, Impromptu
  6. Brian Morgan:          Apologetics, Team Policy, Impromptu, Dramatic Interp. & Duo
  7. Madeleine Sullivan: Apologetics, Team Policy, Impromptu, Original Oratory
  8. Kristen Rodgers:      Apologetics, Team Policy, Impromptu, Persuasive
  9. Jonathan Rodgers:  Apologetics, Team Policy, Impromptu, Persuasive
  10. David Umstattd:       Apologetics, Team Policy, Impromptu, Open Interpretation

In case you are wondering, with her mom, Cynthia Umstattd attended another CFC conference, this one in Covington, LA (New Orleans’ suburb) as a Red Alumni in LD Debate and considering becoming a CFC Intern next year.
