Judging Rules
Ø The speech is to be 5 – 7 minutes in length. A contestant will be disqualified if the speech is timed to be less than 4 minutes or over 8 minutes in length. It is at the judges’
discretion how the 4-5 minute and the 7-8 minute speech will reflect in the ranking.
Ø The timekeeper will display a green card at 5 minutes, a yellow card at 6 minutes and a red card at 7 minutes.
Ø The speech must be an original work, by one speaker, not used in a previous year’
s formal speech competition.
Ø Humor and satire are permitted.
Ø Speakers presenting a speech which is intense or otherwise unsuitable for all audiences should consider ways to protect sensitive audience members by announcing before the speech begins that it may not be suitable for all audiences. This will allow younger students, families, and the timekeeper, if appropriate, to leave the room before the speech begins.
Ø Props, costumes, and audiovisuals are not allowed. A prop refers to any physical item which might be used to animate or illustrate the speech. A costume refers to a part or all of the speaker’
s attire that is worn for the purpose of enhancing a particular speech, instead of being part of the required dress code for all events at the tournament.
Ø Gratuitous vulgarity is not allowed. Gratuitous vulgarity refers to vulgar, obscene, or profane language or gestures which are included for shock value.
Ø Only feet are permitted to touch the floor at any time.
Ø Speakers are permitted to express opinions which are contrary to those of the judge.
Ø Directly quoted material may comprise a maximum of 30% of the total words in the speech.
Ø All outside sources must be cited within the speech.
Ø Use of script or notes during a speech is allowed. The judge may consider this in ranking contestants.
Ø Prompting or assistance from audience members during the speech is not allowed.
Ø Audience laughter, which extends the time of a piece, should not penalize the speaker.
